Well, the journey has officially begun.
I left Colorado on Thursday morning graciously accompanied by my step-dad, Ron, who flew out Wednesday afternoon with the sole purpose of helping me make the drive to LA. Yesterday was a rollercoaster of emotions, the picture of me waving goodbye to the Colorado sign was when it really hit me and I did have to take a few deep breaths after that and a few phone calls to good friends to reassure me that I am still doing the right thing and they will indeed "kill" me if I turned around now. Which was a likely possibility had I been making this portion of the journey alone, so I am ever so grateful for Ron's grounding presence.
Now that I am in Thousand Oaks with my family I am feeling better, and believe it or not, actually excited again.
Not much to say about the road trip itself. It was incredibly smooth and incredibly fast. We stopped in St. George for the night (94 degrees at midnight, that was a surprise), and made it to Las Vegas by 1pm today. We walked along the Strip for a bit and ate at the buffet at the Paris hotel. It will be interesting to compare the decadence of Vegas to the simplicity of Sangkhlaburi and I am glad we stopped. Although I really hate that place. For one thing, it is hot as hell. My temperature gauge said 114 degrees as we were leaving. It is full of hopelessness and shame, people sitting with blank stares wishing for that penny slot to pay off big. Men standing along the sidewalks every four feet handing out free smut to entice the single men who walk by. Sin City, America's Playground, is really the saddest place I have ever been.
