Who knew that there are BRIGHT pink flamingos in Southern Patagonia? I sure didn't. Due to Annie's love for birding, we took a trip to the bird sanctuary down by Lago Argentino. To our surprise there was lots of flocks of pink flamingos in the water. These birds were so pink, I don't think I will ever be able to describe how pink they were. It was pretty cool to see so many of them in one area just a couple feet or should I say metres from us. Not only did I learn how pink a flamingo could be, but I also came to understand that flamingos stand on TWO feet not just one like I had always thought. Annie definitely straightened that idea out quickly. The most amazing part of watching these flocks of penguins, I mean flamingos was watching them fly around the lake. It looked like large pink flags waving above the lake. Those flamingos were just SO pink!

One can not travel to El Calafate, Argentina and not see or tour the glaciers that are all around the area. El Calafate is most famous for Glaciar Perito Moreno. We traveled by boat around Lago Argentino and through several of the arms that flow from Lago Argentino in order to visit the four glaciers in the area. We got to see Glacier Upsala, Glacier Spegazzini, Glacier Ameghino, and Glacier Perito Moreno. The glaciers had jagged edges and the ice looked like it could break at any moment, but at the same time the glacier looks massive, heavy, and hard as rock. It was an amazing site! We have all seen pictures of bright blue icebergs and glaciers, but I have always thought those pictures were color enhanced. Absolutely NOT! The icebergs and glaciers here in El Calafate look just as blue in real life as they do in those pictures everyone has seen.

Unfortunately, glaciers all around the world are melting, including those in El Calafate. Although it is definitely a tragedy that so many glaciers are melting, it is still amazing to see large chunks of ice fall at high speed from the glacier into the water below. Imagine a house being catapulted off a high, high, cliff and falling into water. That was the glacier melting. It definitely got a lot of "ooh la la's" from the French spectators (no joke). The whole experience was pretty unreal.

The ATM's have no money. Not one peso. And we need cash. The whole town needs cash. Suggestions?

Tourist Flight
Dec 08, 2009

So we were on a flight from El Calafate to Ushuaia. Apparently the skies are usually not great to fly in, but yesterday was perfect. The pilot decided to go on a joy ride around Torres Del Paine, the Glaciers to the North, and Mt. Fitzroy. This was a commercial flight, on a respected airline. It would be the equivalent of United dropping down to the Grand Canyon because the weather was good, on a cross country flight- with no fear of arrest or job loss. How cool??

This is the best hostel that we have stayed in yet! The people here treat you like old friends and the moment you walk in the door you feel like you belong here. The staff is a group of young hippies that are willing to help you with any problem or help you book any activity you would want to do. If you come to El Calafate, stay at I Kue Ken.

Imagine blackberry, meets huckleberry, meets raspberry. That is Calafate Icecream. Its deep purple, sure to stain anything you own, and completely delicious. The berry is the namesake for the town.

Lago Numez. Amazing. Go on a calm day and the whistling ducks are a great soundtrack to your walk.

Do NOT eat here. The service was awful. Mainly because they served chicken milanesa (we ordered grilled chicken) and wouldn't take it back when it was breaded. You can guess who was about to throw a fit.

Tour through cow country with a glacial backdrop. Not a bad way to spend the morning.

Read the story. It was great, except bring your own lunch. It is not included (found out the hard way).
