On the morning of day 2 we travel by minibus to the seaside holiday settlement of Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula (2.5 hours). Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean the peninsula has a rugged volcanic interior cloaked in forest while its fringes are scattered with picturesque coves and white sand beaches. Walk the coastal path or take an optional sea kayak trip to remote Cathedral Cove, climb to the top of a historic Maori pa (fortified village) site or simply hang out on the beach with local holiday makers enjoying the sun, sand and surf. If the tides are right we will visit Hot Water Beach during our stay on the Coromandel. Thermal waters brewing below the sands on this famed surf beach allow you to dig your own hot-water pool.

Do you like blasting Captain Beefheart on your iPod while taking a breakneck-paced bus ride in the NZ countryside? Who doesn't? Really, this second day of the tour was one of the most memorable of my life. Crashing waves and a forest straight out of "Avatar" - except the character development was much more believable. I vaguely remember a barbeque later that evening. Did I mention New Zealand's fine assortment of wines yet? Hah?

Where are all of the dogs? In 1894 Sir Hugs Fluffington III hired a circus strongman to throw a ball really hard in the direction of Fiji. The canine population has never recovered.
