Mail drop days are fattening. Everyone gets sweets mailed to them and then there is a group share and bingefest of everything sugary and buttery.

This is a single city way down deep in a valley all by itself. It was very beautiful to see as we rode in from above, dropping down a mile long 14% downgrade. My brakes were burning as I clamped them for dear life since it was a curvy busy road full of potholes. Apparently there was a great flood here in the early 1900s that devastated the town. The movie
Slap Shot was also filmed here.

Today was one of the best days of cycling yet. The first 41 miles until our lunch stop we relatively flat smooth and scenic. We got to our trailer set up by 1045 ate a light snack and napped out in the sun for about an hour. Then it was off to cycling again for the most insane hill climbs I have ever seen. We don't know ahead of time what the terrain will be like so every twist and turn is a geographical mystery unfolding usually to our dissatisfaction. After the first couple hills my quads were on fire. Then the hills turned into mountains and the climbs got steeper and longer. I had a great feeling of accomplishment after getting to the top of several without stopping for a break. Most of the time I try to downshift and want to cry as I see an asphalt launch pad to heaven in front of me and realize I'm already in the lowest gear. Then I just slow it down and keep on trucking. Slowly but surely I make it to the top and experience the best feeling of relief there is. Instead of complaining over hills like is the group norm, I flew into them, attacking the climb with one fist tilted in the air like superman. I sang songs up the mountains, I circled around to go back down and climb back up with other riders. I even wrote moderately humorous messages in chalk at the top. It was a long day but
My group of three was the first to reach our host site after some ridiculous climbs and leg exhaustion. Tonight was another laundry night and happy to say we didn't run out of detergent this time. All clothes are clean and actually dry this time. As with all Thursdays, today was a mail day. I got a sweet letter from Tara and a wondeful 4th of July package from Linda and Ray. Many thanks for the fun and excitement of receiving cool stuff. Here's to both the most painful and enjoyable ride all in one day...
