Meet Mary Kate. She was my ride partner for the day and we got to share 40 miles of stories. She went to Smith college in northampton where she majored in all things cool. She likes folk music her family and when bike and build is over she is moving to India for a job. She worked at Nature's classrom (bonus points) and may have a long lost twin in Zoey Dechanel.
Meet Ryan. He is from Ohio and is in love with biology. He wants to become an advisor to a nature oriented tv show and finds inspiration from the Jeff Corwin experience. He has over 13 tatoos and plans on doing the 72 oz. steak challenge when we get to texas. Major props to him because he is the only one on the trip without cycling shoes that clip into the pedals and make riding and especially hill climbing a lot easier.
We got several small donations from different places in town that we asked after our ride.

Dance parties to celebrate your departure from one state or arrival in another...always a good idea.

The trip isn't about racing to the finish line, it's about finding all the cool stuff you can do before you get to the end.

My butt hurts. And I mean real bad. I'm getting major chaffing on my cheeks which is very common among cyclists especially since i'm putting in some big miles. We're supposed to use chamois butter which is a preventive cream to rub on your butt and the seams of cycling shorts to prevent chaffing and painful sores. In addition eveyone has gone out and bought powders gels and creams for post ride relief. Maybe I should have upgraded my seat because my butt is hating me right now. Breakfast at one of last years riders house got the morning started right with organic hot delicious and plentiful food. She also made dinner last night and I fueled up with thousands of calories of vegetarian cuisine. Today was only a 40mile day and I stuck it out in the back ofthe pack to relax before tomorrows big 94mile ride. The hills continued to be the bane of my existence but at a slow pace they were almost enjoyable especially with the views they led to. Coming down one I caught a max speed of 49mph before gusts of wind made me think my bike was going to explode and I hit the brakes. Lunch has a magical power of invigorating me like nothing else can. After 3 peanut butter and blueberry jelly sandwiches, a slice of watermelon and a banana I was in my way with my super positive and enthusiastic ride partner Mary Kate. Ryan joined in and we carried on some delightful conversation until we got to the host site. They should really call bike and build cross country church tour because we crash in one everywhere we go. A special thanks to all the YMCAs that have let us walk in and take showers. Some of the group explored the city of Pittsfield when we got in. We found a farmers stand and got fresh local peaches blueberries strawberries and cookies. Then we walked to the cycling shop a toy store and a bar to get more food and watch some World Cup action. I held off on eating so I could stuff my face at dinner extra good. On the ride today there was beautiful mountainous scenary but not much to explore. Toward the end of the ride I saw a kid with his slip and slide in the front yard. I got off my bike and asked him if I could play. He said sure so I dismounted my bike slid through a pool of cold water and was on my way just as fast. To otherwise keep myself occupied today, I decided to do a pushup workout: 25 pushups every hour on the hour. So no matter where I was, in bed on the middle of a mountain I stopped to do pushups. I even roped two other guys into doing it with me. Some people think I'm crazy, but it was only a matter of time.
