Meet Natalie. She has a degree in furniture design which sounds awesome. She played soccer in college and told me how hard it was to balance that with schoolwork. Whereas most athletes take homework with them to do on the bus, she couldn't take a bandsaw with her to build furniture. Non stop Nat as her nickname goes might love saved by the bell as much as I do because she gets up every morning to watch it. She is quick with one liners and hilarious in the perfect dose. Probably the best personality on the trip.
Meet Kate. She went to Dartmouth where she graduated with a degree in art and computer science. For her senior thesis she designed a bird sculpture that captures and projects digital images of passerbys. It sounded all types of complex and took about 950 hours to complete. She is well on her way to establishing a career as a sculpture. She also knows the best camp games ever and always has ideas for activities.
Meet Sara. Sara is putting in long hours at Penn State to set up her future career as a dentist. Ive learned more about oral hygeine from talking to Sara for an hour than I have from all the dentist visits in my whole life. The things she knows about teeth are fascinating. She swam in college and even had a chance encounter with Joe Paterno one time in the athletic facility. We got emails leading up to the trip telling us to label all our stuff. Sara took it to the extreme and sewed orange ribbon with white polka dots onto everything she owns. It's very cute and nothing of hers will ever be mistaken as anyone elses. She most recently cut her hair and donated it. Group superlative: best laugh.

Every ride there is a team of two riders who bring up the rear. It is their duty to be the last ones in and make sure everyone is accounted for by not letting anyone drop behind them. This position is called sweep and in addition to being the last riders, sweep also carries a first aid kit and spare tires. Everyone has to sweep 3 times during the trip, I was just unlucky enough to draw the 96 mile day. For ten hours I was on the road in the back of the pack getting torn apart by the most ridiculous headwinds ever. The downhills where slow and the uphills were almost unbearable as the rolling hills and strong wind almost got the best of me. I really missed having a paceline today to get me through conditions like these. What saved the day was the fact that we were going through the most beautiful landscape ever. For the whole ride, Amish country surrounded us. There were farms with cattle, horses, sheep, corn, wheat, beets, raspberries, squash and anything you could think of. The greens were vivid and looking in any direction wasn't just beautiful, it was majestic. Men pulled field carts with horses to round up hay. Horses and buggies moved along the roads interwoven with regular cars driving by. The sky was the bluest blue and the clouds were just smiles of fluff. Even though my butt paid the price of pedaling for that long, it was totally worth it to take in the breathtaking wonder that is Amish country.
