Amazing, perfect, a dream! This hippie, solar powered resort on Itambira Island was perfect for chilling. It has several levels of accomodations including tents, dorm/hostel, GeoDomes, wood cabins and family cottages. Each is fairly cheap ($6.50 for hostel, $11 for Geodome). The GeoDomes are this open air huts made of wood and straw that have finished wood floors (see pictures). They are so amazing and peaceful. You literally wake up and view the still lake and the green colors of the forest from your open front facade.
The resort is designed for chilling. It has a fully stocked library, movie theater ($1 per person, 100s of movies to choose from), amazing food, board games, canoes, a swimming dock and internet.
As if you needed MORE reason to stay here: this is a not-for-profit outfit (Byoona Amagara Project) using all solar energy and using 100% of the proceeds to support the Lake Bunyonyi community.

The resorts around the lake have varying degrees of accomodations and fill up easily. Call a few days before your trip to book a cheap place and the style of room you prefer.

We stayed on Itambira Island which is one of 10 or so tiny islands in the lake. Many are very close to each other and the water is very calm and free of fresh water parasites. Therefore you can swim between islands for a good work out and then hike around them once you get there. Alternatively you can take canoes to each island and explore.

The west side of Uganda is bordering on Central Africa which means rain forest and jungle. This implies that it rains a lot and can be overcast for days at a time. I would double check the weather before heading out to make sure you have at least 1 sunny day to swim in the lake.

This is THE place to read, watch movies, eat good food (a real pleasure after traveling in Africa for a while), hike and do group games or activities.

GeoDome was unreal. $11 per person was a steal. Staying in one of these was well worth the trip.

The kitchen at this resort feeds you like a king. Best food I had in Africa was expensive Indian in Kampala and this place. The signature dishes include crayfish and tilapia endemic in the lake. They made pizza, indian food, sandwichers, breakfast, desert, etc. Best part: prices range from $3-5 per meal.

You need to take a special hire from Kabale to the lake. It'll cost you 15,000 USh per cab ($7.50). If you are going to a lakeside resort then they'll take you there. If you're staying on an island then have the cab take you to Rutinda dock.
