We had a fairly early start packing our bags before a rushed breakfast before our minivan arrived to take us on the 7-8 hour trip north to the small town of Chiang Khong on the Thai side of the Mekong River close to the border crossing to Laos.
The minivan was pretty packed and the ride was windy and bumpy and hot. Along the way we stopped briefly for lunch, at the White Temple (Wot Rong Khun) and at Chiang Rai before getting in at Chiang Khong about 4pm. The ticket we had booked in Chaing Mai included the minvan, first night accommodation, dinner, breakfast and 2 days on the slow boat so not surpringly our accommodation in Chiang Khong was one of the most 'affordable' ones in town. Thankfully it had aircon though!
We wandered around Chaing Kong before dinner, not much to see really but we were hoping to find a travel agent to book accommodation for tomorrow night in Pakbeng as we'd heard that many places were rat infested and very average but despite our best efforts we had no luck!
Dinner was basic fried rice with egg but did the job. The bus ride had taken in out of us a bit though so we headed to bed fairly early. Tomorrow Laos!
Minivan from Chiang Mai to Chaing Khong

We were picked up from our guest house around 9am for a long and windy day of driving up through Chiang Mai to Chiang Kong close to the Thai / Laos border on the banks of the Mekong River. It was over 35 degrees and not the most enjoyable 7 hours of my life but then again not the worst and am I'm definitely adapting to these kind of transitions from place to place!

Basic place, we got one of the better rooms which had air con but still pretty dim, dirty and a ton of mossies coming in under the door.
