Good Morning Vietnam
Sep 18, 2009
Well today was our first morning in Mexico. After a restless night trying to settle into our new surroundings, we were greeted by a gorgeous sunrise- oh, and a Mexican military gunship circling our campsite. As we pulled out of our campsite I nonchalantly commented to Noah ‘They’re still circling the van’, which didn’t seem too exciting until he looked out his driver’s window and was looking straight across at the guys hanging out the open door with machine guns in their hands. By this time they had lowered down to eye level on the edge of the highway, shadowing us. They were nice enough to escort us out onto the highway and then flew next to us for about a mile before apparently getting bored and moving on. They must have just been checking out our sweet new bumpers that were added at GoWesty…
We pushed hard all day, going through numerous little towns before heading off the highway and heading towards Agiabampo which sits on the coast. Agiabampo was a very poor little fishing village, mostly made up of rustic shacks and appeared to have more chickens and dogs than people. We slowly made our way down the dirt road through town, waving at all the locals as they stared back at us like we both had two heads. I’m sure we looked like a couple of very lost Gringos.
We eventually came out close to the coast and at first we thought we were golden with a nice breeze blowing through the van. We made some quick Ramen noodles and sat in the van, listening to large bug’s crash into the screens attempting to make it to the glow inside. Eventually the breeze died down and we spent the rest of the night sleeping in a pool of our own sweat, but at least it was quiet.
