Pink Turkey
Nov 26, 2009
We camped just outside of Desaguadero, the border town of Peru/Bolivia the night before so when we got up early, we’d be right at the border and able to get far into Boliva. We awoke and gave each other the customary ‘Happy Thanksgiving’ and noted that this was my first holiday spent out of the country. After driving a few miles, we came to a lagoon that was teeming with Flamingos. Of course I had to keep the Thanksgiving theme going, so I asked ‘I wonder if they taste like turkey?’ We laughed at the thought of a stuffed pink bird on the van table at the end of the day.
We had to stand in line for a while at the border, but overall the border crossing was pretty painless. We’re finding that border crossings in South America are much more laid back than in Central America. We motored on and headed towards the capital city of La Paz. We had heard that Bolivia had horrible roads, but we were pleasantly surprised that the highway we drove all day was just fine. We made it through La Paz without incident, and continued on until almost dark, where we found a cool camping spot off the road that overlooked a large marsh/lagoon. We were overdue for an oil change, so we started working on the van until it got dark.
