Into the Mist
Nov 04, 2009
Today we said goodbye to Dave and Kacey, Nick and Rochelle, Greg and Carrie, Lee, Giselle and Juliana, Patricia and Renata and a dozen other travelers that we met while staying in Cartagena. The only upside to being stuck there for two weeks was that Cartagena was a beautiful city, and we met an incredible cast of characters while there.
It took us a while to find the road out of town, but once we were on it, we cruised along quickly. By mid-afternoon we started climbing and climbed high into the mountains until dark. The countryside between Cartagena and Medillin is very lush and life seems to be centered on dairy production. Cattle were perched precariously on steep terraced mountainsides covered in bananas and coffee. As we climbed higher, the temperature kept dropping, and we eventually made our way into the cold mist. As it got dark we pulled off at a restaurant/truck stop and paid the owner a few bucks to park in his lot. Next to the restaurant was a milk house, and within five minutes of us pulling up, folks started coming out of the woodwork, interested in learning more about the van. People are always in awe as you show them that we have two beds, a stove, refrigerator and sink right in our little van. People always seem to follow up the initial questions with ‘do you have television?’ which always garners a chuckle.
