Get Busy Living
Sep 23, 2009
After our little scare with La Policia, we headed out before dawn towards the coast. Once we hooked back up with Hwy 200, the road quickly became tight with what seemed like a turn every fifty feet. This would be a fun road in a sports car, but in an 8000lb van, it's an arm workout! It actually reminded me of Route 1 up the coast towards Monterey,CA, where the mountains come right down to the ocean. The only difference being that I could only catch glimpses of the ocean through the jungle, and I was swerving to avoid iquanas and crabs along the way...
Our original goals was to push hard to make Acapulco, but then we realized where we were. We would be going right through a little place called Zihuatanejo. A minimally commercialized destination town that sits on a gorgeous, almost enclosed bay. The book said there were RV parks too. Perfect.
There is a quote from one of my favorite movies, The Shawshank Redemption, that goes 'Get busy living, or get busy dying...' For some reason, it's one that has always stuck with me. In the same scene, Andy Dufrain talks about where he'd go if he ever got out of prison. You guessed it, Zihuatanejo. If it was good enough for Andy to see after twenty years in the brick, it's probably worth a look.
We got lucky and found a great RV park right on one of the four beaches in the bay, where it was just us and a couple of other Americans. They have a great big cabana that looks out into the bay, and there seems to be enough of a breeze to keep the bugs away. The owners were very nice and completely accommodating. It stormed that night and cooled things off, so we acted like we are on vacation and stayed a second full day to take advantage of our surroundings. It poured all morning, so we lazily sat in our chairs outside the van, letting the rain refreshingly wash away the salt and sand. It's time to relax, catch up and just get busy living...
