Sand texture.
F'ing hot out. The sun scorches at the Salton Sea.
Tattered drapes hang silent in the Salton Sea. This is part of an abandoned trailer from the 50's.
Ryan chills out in the Salton sea pimp easy chair.
Dead Tilapia lay silent, remnants of a mass die off years ago, at the edge of the Salton Sea.

Ohh Mama its Hot.

I picked up Renaldo just outside Pasadena. It was hot as balls out, but like geniuses we were, we dashed out of town to Palm Springs to hang out at his Grandparents house. The thermometer read 113 degrees as we rolled in to town. However our purpose was not to roast and hang out with all the geriatric cougars that were on the loose. Instead we used the house as base camp as we reached out into the Imperial Valley, where the eerie place called Salton Sea exists. Beyond that laid waist land, desert, and massive dunes.

However the highlight of the trip for me was Leonard Knight. Not only does he share the name of my father, he is a spectacular man. 76 years old, he has spent the last 27 years building Salvation Mountain. A labor of love, and a dedication to Love and God, Leonard builds the mountain out of mud and water, and paints the bright colors in donated paint. Living solely off of what people donate to him, Leonard is a vibrant and passionate man. He lives to show others his Mountain and Dome, and is so excited about spreading the message of God and Love.

Tips
Travel in winter
Unless you love heat and worship dryness, stay out of the Salton Sea until winter. It's much more pleasant than the 113 degree high we endured.
Lodging

Don't stay here

Besides its random weirdness, bizarre abandoned buildings, and the questionable nature of people who would live in the middle of nowhere, there is really no reason to stay here. Its a day trip from San Diego, or a nice afternoon drive to madness from Palm Springs. Sunsets are spectacular here though.
Activities

Salvation Mountain

Just east outside the town of Niland, lays Salvation Mountain. (just ask anyone in town about it). A small old man named Leonard build a huge painted mountain out of his passion to tell the story that "God is Love".
Thoughts
It's amazing how another world is only two hours away from where you live. When is the last time you took a road trip into the unknown?
