On the road to South Dakota via Minnesota. Lots of ground covered today: 350 or so miles, four states, including two personal firsts (SD and MN). Southern Minnesota is very, very remote. A few small towns, a few farms, but not much else. Lots and lots of straight, empty highway (90 West). Oh snap! Saw a sign for the Spam museum, but were going the wrong direction. Almost ran out of gas (again), but managed to pulled in to Beaver Creek, MN, a very small “town” a few miles from the SD border.

Met a very friendly, curious farmer, filling his gas cans right next to us. He kept calling me “sir,” and seemed impressed (not really at all) by my newfound Iowa farming cred. Pretty sure I’m the first person from Washington, D.C. he’s met. I hope he did not see me struggling to figure out how to fill the tank. (Insert federal government joke here.) I’m sure that even farmers forget to pull the little lever up. Of course.
