After driving through the west side of the island, over H-2, passed Hickam AFB; Schofield Barracks; Camp Mokuleia (where both Makaena and I spent a week of our 8th grade year in cabins); the Dillingham air strip (where we watched planes being towed out and then gliding in); Camp Erdman; and other semi-familiar sights, Maka took The Monster Truck off-roading a bit. The gate at the end of the road was open, and we couldn’t resist checking it out.

We bumped and bruised our way to a good stopping point, about 100 yards from the gate, overlooking the water. Besides one or two groups of people fishing, the place was deserted. The brown mountains behind us and the dry, overgrown shrubs near where we stopped added to the ruggedness of the terrain. Great view from just about the western-most point on the island, and as Makaena said, “one of the few places in Hawaii that hasn’t been invaded by tourists.”
