Seeing Haleakala, the highest volcanic peak on Maui, through the airplane window during our descent in to Maui was breathtaking. The low clouds and the sun setting behind the volcano made for a pretty lovely Welcome to Hawaii. We took pictures, snuggled, smiled wide, all without the touch of self-consciousness. Great to be here together. Finally.
The first sound I hear coming up the jet way happened to be the first pigeon English conversation of the trip.
“Hi, Dom Dom,” says Hawaiian Airlines Worker #1. “Oh, hi, hi,” says Hawaiian Airlines Worker #2 before asking, “Where you wuz dis morn-neeng?”
Amazing. I had forgotten how hilarious pigeon is. Almost as funny: remembering myself sounding a bit like that as a kid.
Not much to say about Kahului airport. Small, kinda dark, and pretty nondescript. We hung out at Gate 9 for about 45 mins with several other ticketholders before boarding a very small plane bound for Honolulu.
