From Kahuku we drove through several other “towns” on the North Shore, including Laie, Hauula, Punaluu, and Kaaawa, before reaching Chinaman’s Hat (aka Molokii Island). Though not especially politically correct, the name is a perfect descriptor of the little island visible directly off the coast. We got out, took a bunch of pictures and goofed around, lamenting that the drive and much of the day was about to end. A fun place to see, especially because I have such good memories of stopping there, and it’s one of the few things LVL remembers from her first visit to Hawaii, circa 1980. *
*A few of her other memories: first ever trip to a Popeye’s Chicken, staying in Kaneohe, and getting robbed. Sounds like a great trip. [Ed. note: I also remember snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, lots of frogs hopping across the condo walkways at night, seeing Harold Sakata (aka Oddjob from Goldfinger) while buying a jade necklace, and, unlike my husband who grew up on the island, I most definitely went to the Polynesian Cultural Center (where many of the dancers are now rumored to be blondies from BYU, but I recall everyone back then seeming far more local). It was indeed a great trip.]
