After Matsumoto’s and the quick stop at Waimea, we got back on the road headed toward Kailua. Passed several more famous north shore surf breaks, including Pipeline and Pounders, among others, before stopping at Sunset Beach. Surprisingly, the beach was not too crowded. The ocean was light blue/green, glassy, and for the most part, totally flat (notwithstanding a little shore break). The perfect place to stop and swim around.
I was most taken with how quickly the water becomes really deep. We all spent some time diving to the bottom. The best guess was that the ocean bottom was about 20 feet below where we were treading water, at a spot about 25 yards from shore. After about 30-40 minutes of treading water, I was pretty tired and ready to head in. For his part, Makaena was not at all tired; perhaps it was owing to his self-discovered buoyancy, which meant that he didn’t have to tread/paddle in order to stay afloat. Ha.
