Snow monkeys
Jan 30, 2012

They live in the snow, they stay warm in an onsen..

Forever hunting for scattered grain in the snow :)

Totally unperturbed by tourists and the clatter of a DSLR

The little fellas are very inquisitive :)

Are they white like a polar monkey? Or regular monkey brown?

Japanese beef is amazing! Delicious and expensive.

Soup, rice, salad and a local apple to finish it off.

The art of Katsushika Hokusai.. You know his stuff...

They have an original of 'the great waves', including all the separate woodcuts that make up the finished work.

The first Buddhist temple in Japan

The complex was established 1400 years ago and the current wooden temple was built in 1707.

For 300 year old wood its holding up pretty well!

Skiboarding
Jan 31, 2012

A change to skis for one adventurer yields much success :)

Happo-one day

Gondola to sakka via panorama

Coffee @ snow plaza

Sakka fun loops

Sakka quad to kokusai via skyline course

Lunch at the roots cafe (gluten free treats)

Kokusai 1 + Kokusai 3 to nakiyama via risen slalom and nakiyama

Nakiyama 3 loops 'til buggered then a 100m walk home :D

Quite a great day!

All the way to the top of the Grat Quad at the summit of Happo-One

This is a different world, almost no visibility, only slightly more oxygen and three feet of powder..

The first half was a battle, any falls are a 30sec restart after digging out, and incredibly tiring!

Fogged goggles mean I'm totally blind, time for a rest at Usagidaira Terrace...

Coke did the trick!

Fast and flowing all the way down.

A very long run, numb back leg by the bottom.

1000m vertical, 8km of snowboarding!!

The good old sugar & caffeine hit

Snow getting heavier, heading inside to wait it out...

Could be curtains for the day.

Iwatake
Feb 02, 2012

The bus to Hakuba Cortina was delayed by snow so we settled for Iwatake.

A great place to end up, hidden from the wind and all the cool kids seem to hang out there!!

The snow was awesome, Japanese people stick to the groomed runs leaving the edges and side tracks full of untouched powder!

Ah so "Guruten Arerugi" turns out to be legit! Lucky! xx

Had to happen..

Confidence at an all time high.... 'sure I'll attack that powder field at warp speed'...

Slightly too much weight on the front foot very quickly became WAY too much weight on the front foot...

Board stops, body continues and executes a perfect cartwheel/frontflip in a cloud of powder..

Progress halts with me back in perfect riding position, except buried in 1.5m of snow..

Brit cruises past cackling her head off, I'm in zero pain and chuckling too but thanks for asking :P

5 mins to dig myself out..

My only regret is that I didn't get to watch, would have been quite spectacular!
