Seared Bonito
Feb 04, 2012

Kochi is a fishing city, so we went hunting for fresh seafood.

Found a nice little restaurant and sat down. Everything is perfect until we are delivered a menu in Japanese only.

With a polite giggle the waitress reorients the sideways menu I was pretending to read.

After my best attempt at the Japanese phrase for "I'll have the local specialty, please" I am delivered a plate of lightly seared bonito.

Rich colour in the flesh, tasty stuff.

The Japanese are onto something, good fish doesn't need much cooking :)

Yummo looks delicious!!

So we made it to watch some bicycle racing and it didn't disappoint!

Much like the greyhounds only much more glamorous and ceremonial, with only slightly less sleaze.

The crowd of gambling old fellas were there reading the form and punting away in the cigarette haze.

Trackside was a grand stadium, the bicycles were as fantastic as I'd hoped, highly polished models from frame-building greats like Nagasawa, Fuji, Bridgestone and 3Rensho.

Great racing, plenty of contact that made Mark Renshaw's 2011 TdF troubles look like child's play.

Twice I approached the counter with a half-filled Japanese betting card and ¥1000. The first resulted in what I assume was a trifecta of which two riders placed (no win)

The second I think got me an each way bet on riders 1 and 7, who ended up finishing 1-2 ¥4200 payout!! (about $50)

A great day out and less snow by the looks, making it more pleasant to sit outside in?
