Well, here I am quite a ways from Hood River, Oregon. I left on Monday with some real excitement on the way out of town. As I meandered to the auto parts store, a BIG truck lost his huge tire, plunking him onto his axle as he skidded to a stop. The tire careened across the road hitting the side of the car in front of me and jetted in front of my car into a nearby orchard. I slowed down and missed the tire completely and felt Spirit was watching me.
I drove down the Oregon side of the Columbia, past The Dalles and up Hwy 97 toward the Cascades. I passed the back side of where I was the day before with the 56 mph winds and noticed the huge wind machines they have installed all over the hills. Surprise! Surprise!
Then I traveled up toward Leavenworth, a Bavarian created town, similar to Solvang in CA and Cashmere, where they make the applets and cotlets candy. I fortunately met up with and lovely couple as I was gasing up at Costco in Yakima and they told me of the sweetest county park ever. It is right on the Wenatchee River with only two spots available to the non-RVer like me. the grassy grounds were filled with tons of fancy 35 ft. + motorhomes decorated with hanging baskets and ladder golf games were at many sites. The temps were in the 70s at night and 80s closing in on 90s today.
I visited the applets and cotlets candy store today to watch their production. I had seen it 40 years ago when Fred and I traveled through and it hasn't changed. Next stop, Leavenworth, a town in the Cascades who changed their whole look to Bavarian village from farm town. It was full of shops and a yodeling entertainerwas in the park. Not my cup of tea, so off I went to the Cascades. Up and over Stevens Pass on the way to Seattle, but not without a stop to hike on an old RR grade called the Iron Gate Trail. Pretty fasinating huge concrete walls put in in the late 1890s to support snowsheds for the trains. The picture of the twin tunnels is pretty amazing, now a haven for the ferns and plants and trees, which are taking over. I went on down the road and found Deception Falls, where a nice man took my picture. Pretty wild water!
Trekking down the road into civilization to Everett, just out of Seattle and north to Anacortes, where I will take off on the ferry to Sidney, Vancouver Island, BC tomorrow AM at 8:30 AM. I put in the address of Washington Park to Spirit, my GPS and found it is only 3/4 of a mile from where the ferry takes off. The ferry is not full tomorrow and I set up my camp at the park and came into town to Blog. I found The Brown Lantern, a cute little pub with WIFI and here I am having a way-to-hot pair of pork tacos with brown beer, having a great time. I bought an alarm clock to make sure I am up in the morning and in line an hour early.
I am having a great time with all my adventures, but there are times I wish I could share them with all my friends in the moment.I am a people person, but camping doesn't lend itself to meeting people. This is the part where I am discovering things about myself. I had grandiose plans to cover a lot of ground in BC, but I am now learning to enjoy the places I am in the moment and not worry what the next venue will be.
Let me know how you are all doing by emailing me as I don't get comments off the Blog site for some reason.
