Well, between 2002-2004 I lived in Los Angeles and left a trail of good friends there - most of whom I met through rock climbing. I wanted to visit them an reminisce a little bit about my old life - which was primarily poker and rock climbing. Sadly I wouldn't be able to climb due to the aforementioned hamstring injury (and Horse Flats up in the Angeles Crest - my favorite local place was still closed due to fires).

However, the main motivation for visiting Los Angeles to visit my friend who recently fought through a battle with tongue cancer. Due to lots of plans being rearranged, I got to stay with her for three days which included: a walk, a nap (or two), a trip to the farmers market, a hike up near Mailbu, dinner with friends (twice), and some sort of scrabble like game with flash cards (think Upwords).

Lately, I've had a lot of cancer amongst auxiliary people in my life (people I love but only see once a year or so) - but this person was the youngest, only 37 years old. It definitely makes me think a lot about what is important, and a reminder that I should be thankful for my health, and enjoy life.

She's doing really well and seems happier and more appreciative of what she has than ever before.

In N' Out Burger
Sep 22, 2009

Lately I've given myself a pass on fast food for only one joint: In N' Out Burger. Supposedly, they have the "best" operation as far as this type of food goes. I did feel a bit dirty paying ~$2 for a double hamburger. But if you must do fast food, this is the place to go - plus I got to visit my old neighborhood in Hollywood.

I met up with a good friend of mine that I hadn't seen in years. I got to meet her boyfriend (who I heartily approve of), eat amazing Thai food, and David Cross sat one table over from us. Win. Win. Win. Go eat here - seriously awesome and reasonably priced, authentic Thai Food...none of that americanized junk!

Almost exactly 10 years ago, I tried surfing on my own with no instruction. I stood up for a total of one second over 2 hours of trying. To celebrate my visit, my buddy Damon set up an afternoon of surfing with his roommates, one of whom, a friend that I hadn't seen since 2004, would be my instructor.

Lidet had me riding a wave literally 5 minutes after entering the water! Granted: easy break, easy longboard, and pushed out into it - but surfing nonetheless. I later paddled myself into a few. It was really exciting (and surreal), and made me wish I had tried this back when I lived in Los Angeles.

I had a panini which was decent - nothing to write home about - but the atmosphere of The Farmers Market (see activities) makes this collection of eateries worth a visit.

The Farmers Market

Attached to the new(ish) swanky outdoor mall, The Grove, is an old maze of eateries known as The Farmers Market. A very cool scene that I'd recommend without hesitation. Lots of unique places to eat, or buy produce, candy, and baked goods. It'll transport you back to a time and place where everyone in town went out to eat at the fair on a Saturday night (but the selection of food is large and better than greasy fried fair food).

Pretty decent farmers market right in the center of a big business district. I had an excellent spring roll for lunch and some great fruit for later.

Malibu Hike

The hike was short (we're both semi injured) but nice (mostly for the conversation). When I used to live here, I would have thought it was beautiful, but I felt myself longing for Colorado hiking!

Commerce Casino

I hadn't played live poker in a few months, so I headed out to Commerce at 9pm - something I did often when I lived in LA. If you've never heard of it Commerce Casino might be one of the largest poker rooms in the entire world - somewhere around 200 tables.

I played $200 no-limit hold 'em for a few hours - although the structure was a bit bizarre ($3 and $5 blinds), making for a fast game that involved a lot of all-ins. I only won 2 decent pots the entire time, and ended up down $150. :-(
