Bus from Bariloche
Dec 22, 2008

Pay attention to the scenery for the first 2 hours, after that it's an entire day of total flatness - 29 hours on the bus!

Kip and I loaded up on food at a gas station, only to have the bus stop a few hours later for a full on pizza dinner?!?

El Calefate is a cute little town. Relatively small, but seems to have charm without being too touristy.

The long awaited Bears/Packers game was actually aired on TV here (amazingly, we had expected to be watching it online via the supposed wifi connection). So this is what we did till 2am. The outcome was not important. What is important is that Kip does not understand the difference between a lucky overtime win and a blowout.

The place isn't huge, and you have to pay a few dollars to enter (and remove your hat?), but you can easily play blackjack without knowing spanish.

Awesome up close views of a glacier. Definitely worth it - unless you are going to see the Grey Glacier up close in Torres del Paine, and then it's okay to skip.

This is why people come to El Calefate - to see the glacier. The only stable glacier of hundreds in the area, you get to walk within a few hundred yards of it and can pay extra to take a boat out onto the lake for a different view. So cool to see 200 foot high walls of ice, which would occasionally break off and plunge into the water. The crevices are the richest dark blue color I've ever seen.

Though it drizzled much of the day and we ended up with a bit too much time there (afterall, how long can you stand there staring at a glacier), it was still worth it. Next time I would definitely pay the extra money to trek ON the glacier.

Cool atmosphere, though it's a little bit out of the way. The food isn't mind blowing, but it's a bit different (tries to be healthy). We left with a bad taste in our mouths after we learned that tack on a few dollars to your order as a per person service fee. Sadly, this wouldn't be the last time we encountered this charge.

The fanciest place we ate at the whole time. My flank steak was amazing.

Decent place...we thought the dorm rooms were a bit overpriced and ended up camping. Basically felt like throwing up a tent in a random backyard. Supposedly free wifi but we had issues getting on.
