My first up close glacier

Dec 23, 2008

This is why people come to El Calefate - to see the glacier. The only stable glacier of hundreds in the area, you get to walk within a few hundred yards of it and can pay extra to take a boat out onto the lake for a different view. So cool to see 200 foot high walls of ice, which would occasionally break off and plunge into the water. The crevices are the richest dark blue color I've ever seen.

Though it drizzled much of the day and we ended up with a bit too much time there (afterall, how long can you stand there staring at a glacier), it was still worth it. Next time I would definitely pay the extra money to trek ON the glacier.
