Old City
Jan 10, 2010

Empty. The rain cleared just as we arrived. We must have been the only people walking the city walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site. During the height of tourist season the old city's sidewalk cafes would be packed with tourists. I'd like to experience that sometime, but I was content with having the place to myself.

Cafe where we ducked in for a warm drink and to let the rain pass.

Mediocre Italian food. Found with the aid of Google.

Lots of flights today. Despite the major winter storms that had paralized much Europe in the previous week, we didn't encounter any delays. Breakfast at the airport in Dubrovnik and lunch in Frankfurt.

Incredible hospitality. This hostel, run by an family out of the lower level of their home. We were greeted at the bus station with my name printed out. Pick-up service easily saved us an hour trying to figure out the buses and hiking up a hill. Served coffee/tea, a shot of plum brandy and snacks while we checked in. Our host also drove us to the airport, for a fair price, the following morning at 6:15am for our 8am flight. Would stay hear again in a heartbeat. The older couple had just celebrated their 36 anniversary and closed the hostel for the month, but let us in because we'd been referred from Majdas in Mostar AND we'd met their son in Sarajevo at Haris' Hostel.

Would visit again. In the warmer seasons there's lots more to do here. Nearby islands have national parks that are accessible via ferry. Regrettably those were closed during the winter. This is a place, albiet pricy, where you can go and relax on the Adriatic.
