St. Maries, located in a quiet valley surrounded by timber, is the county seat of Benewah County and has a population of about 2800.

The local economy is driven by timber along with mining and farming. It has become popular for retirees seeking to live in a place of outstanding beauty and small town friendliness.

St. Maries is known as one of the finest elk hunting spots in the country and is popular for boating on both the St. Joe River and Lake Coeur d'Alene.

Drive from Coeur d'Alene east to Hwy. 3 and south on the White Pine Scenic Byway to St. Maries. Have a bite to eat then return north on the Coeur d'Alene Scenic Byway. One of the loveliest drives in Idaho.

About 2 hrs from Spokane airport via I-90, then S. on Hwy. 95. You could save time by going S. from Spokane and spending more time in Washington, but then, this is a trip to Idaho, right?
