The heart of the Silver Valley, Wallace is a small town of about 1000 nestled in the mountains near the Montana border. Rebuilt after a disastrous fire in 1910, the architecture alone is well worth the trip. The entire town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

You can learn about its rough and tumble past at a variety of museums including a unique bordello museum. Wallace is part of the Coeur d'Alene silver-mining district, which produced more silver than any other mining district in the United States.

Like so many other Idaho towns, the decline of mining has led Wallace to tourism. Mountain biking in summer and snowmobiling in winter are popular activities.

Wallace was the location for the filming of Dante's Peak in 1996. Good thing the volcano was added in post-production. Ask a local about the experience.

"If a thing cannot be dis-proven, it is thereby proven". This comment by someone at a mining conference in 2004 led to the Mayor proclaiming that Wallace must be the Center of the Universe because you can't prove otherwise - and it grew from there. Tourists pose at a sign or on the manhole cover which marks the exact spot. Weddings and other celebrations occur in the middle of Bank & 6th St. the reputed "Center of the Universe".

Have to love a town with this much sense of humor!
