Island Park is a unique historical and geological area in north
Fremont County, Idaho. The area covers a wide strip from what is locally known as the Ashton Hill to the Montana border, in a shallow high altitude basin formed by an ancient volcanic caldera.
Within the area is a city by the name of Island Park that was incorporated in 1947 because Idaho’s liquor laws required a city for the purpose of regulation. The city lines were drawn around existing lodges along the old Highway 20. This gives the city a peculiar configuration, and the distinction of having “the longest Main Street in America.”

“Main Street,” or U. S. Hwy 20 in Island Park, is 33 miles long
from Last Chance to Valley View. Its width, however, is only an
average of 500 feet from the center line of the old highway, where most businesses serving spirits exist, plus extensions to the west that reach Staley Springs and to the east that reach Big Springs.

Island Park was named for its many natural clearings, some
bounded by water, that appear in this otherwise heavily timbered area. These openings in the forest were likened to islands where travelers could stop and “park” to rest or otherwise transact their business.

Both the upper and lower falls can be viewed in full, with the
upper waterfall area enhanced with paths and viewing areas
that make it easily accessible to all. Though only about an hour’s
driving time, the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway is often a half-day’s
journey, with travelers mesmerized by the spectacular display in
the midst of a truly back-country setting. In addition, the historic
Mesa Falls Lodge has been restored to its original splendor and is
now open seasonally for visitor information.

The Targhee is a National Forest of contrasts! Its 1.8 million acres,
in five Ranger Districts, encompass semi-desert, sagebrushdotted,
arid land; timbered highlands and peaks over 10,000 feet;
and streams, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, and wilderness areas.

The Park is surrounded on 3 sides by the Continental Divide. Cutthroat trout,
averaging three to five pounds; cutthroat-rainbow hybrids of up to
12 pounds; and brook trout up to three pounds abound in the waters
of Henrys Lake. This provides a sport fishery that challenges
the float-tuber and is equally exciting for a 10-year old dunking a
worm over the side of the family boat.

Mount Sawtelle
A 10,000 foot peak with a well maintained gravel road that takes you to the top of the mountain where it is like a large flat plateau with flowers in multicolor splendor that are up to your knees.

Bechler Meadows
Adjacent to Island Park, is the Bechler-Falls River basin truly a
waterfall lover’s paradise.

Fall River
One of the most beautiful rivers in the world. This wild scenic river has numerous water falls, no reservoirs, steep canyons, gorges, pure sparkling water, and great fishing.

Warm River
Wildlife stretches along the 26-mile stretch of Warm River, The Head is spring fed, making it a clear, 50 degree river year round. This river provides excellent trout fishing, and a groomed snowmobile trail that winds its way up the canyon.

Big Springs
It’s a river’s birthplace. One hundred and twenty million gallons of pure water a day -- enough to meet the water needs of a million people -- surge out of the ground here.
A short distance from the glassy pool is a bridge. Toss bread
crumbs into the water from it, and you’ll see that constant flow
(at a year-round temperature of 52 degrees) and the clean gravel bottom make for perfect trout habitat. Big Springs’ trout get BIG.
Leave your fishing pole in the car, though: No fishing is allowed
until below the outlet to Henry’s Lake, several miles away.
