Lewiston is located at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. This area was once home to the Nez Perce and the Lewis- Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition camped here on their journey west in 1805. At just 740 feet above sea level, this is the lowest point in Idaho. It is also Idaho’s only seaport. Barge traffic from the Pacific Ocean travels up the Columbia and Snake Rivers to the Port of Lewiston.

The Palouse is a 4,000 square mile region of rolling, asymmetrical
hills composed of loess (wind-blown silt) that stretches from north of Lewiston to almost the southern end of Lake Coeur d’Alene. In the 1860s and 1870s settlers descended upon the
Palouse country, forcing out Native Americans and plowing up the
native grasses and forbs. By the 1920s farmers could safely boast that the Palouse produced more wheat per acre than any other region its size in the world!

The park, just outside Lewiston at Spalding, Idaho, commemorates
the contributions the Nez Perce have made and help protect
and preserve sites, stories, and artifacts associated with their history and culture. The park consists of 38 sites in four states, but the visitor center and museum are located at Spalding.
