North of White Bird on Hwy 95 is White Bird Hill. It climbs 3,000 feet in about seven miles. White Bird Bridge, completed in 1975, is built of three box-section spans that are 906 feet long and the structure contains 2.1 million pounds of steel. The grade climbs just west of the old White Bird road which can been seen on your right as you approach the summit, switchbacking up the slope.
That old road was considered a remarkable engineering feat when it was completed back in 1921. Halfway up the new grade is an interpretive display and overview of the White Bird Battlefield.
The first battle of the Nez Perce War was fought at White Bird
Battlefield on June 17, 1877.
